Matra मात्रा Type foundry — est. 2019

Latin & DevanagariSince 2019Bengaluru

Every letter hangs from a line.

In Devanagari that line is called the मात्रा — the measure. We draw type for both scripts so they can share one.

02 — The foundry

A typeface is a set of decisions about rhythm that has to survive being set badly, at the wrong size, by someone in a hurry. We draw for that case, not for the specimen.

Retail

Six families, all with a variable weight and width axis, licensed for desktop, web and application use.

Custom

Bespoke families and script extensions — most often adding Devanagari to a Latin a brand already owns.

Consulting

Type systems, licensing audits, and getting the shirorekha to line up with a Latin baseline grid without either script losing.

03 — The case

Pick one up.

Before type was a file it was a drawer of metal sorts, sitting in a case, sorted by how often you needed them. Drag one. Throw it.

Six families

Every family below is a real, open-source typeface, credited to the people who actually drew it. Scroll sideways.

  • 01

    Aa Gg Rk

    Anek Latin

Ek Type · variable wght + wdth

Drawn as one arm of a nine-script superfamily, which is why its Devanagari sibling sits on it without a fight.

  • 02

    अ क म र

    Anek Devanagari

Ek Type · variable wght + wdth

A shirorekha that thickens with weight rather than staying a fixed hairline — the detail most Latin-first families miss.

  • 03

    Aa Gg Rk

    Bricolage Grotesque

Mathieu Triay · variable opsz + wdth + wght

An optical-size axis, so the display cut is genuinely a different drawing rather than the text cut set larger.

  • 04

    Aa Gg Rk

    Fraunces

Phaedra Charles & Flavia Zimbardi · SOFT + WONK

Two axes nobody else ships: how soft the terminals are, and how far the italic is allowed to misbehave.

  • 05

    Aa Gg Rk

    Big Shoulders

    Patric King · variable wght

Condensed to the point of being a grid of verticals. Set it at 200px or do not set it at all.

  • 06

    Aa Gg Rk

    Space Mono

    Colophon Foundry · 400 / 700

The one fixed-width family we stock, and the only one here without an axis to drag. Some drawings are finished.

05 — Tester

Set something.

Type into the line. Drag the axes. Both scripts run the same weight and width range, which is the only reason a bilingual setting can ever look like one voice.

06 — Questions

Asked at the counter

What is a मात्रा, and why name a foundry after it?

In Devanagari the मात्रा — the matra, also called the shirorekha — is the horizontal headline that letters hang from. It is both the line and the measure. We draw Latin and Devanagari together so both scripts can share one.

Do you draw Devanagari as well as Latin?

Both, and at the same time rather than one after the other. The commonest commission is a script extension: adding Devanagari to a Latin a brand already owns, matched in weight, width and rhythm so a bilingual setting reads as one voice instead of two.

Retail, custom, or consulting?

All three. Retail — six families, each with a variable weight and width axis, licensed for desktop, web and application use. Custom — bespoke families and script extensions. Consulting — type systems, licensing audits, and getting the shirorekha to line up with a Latin baseline grid without either script losing.

Why must the shirorekha thicken with weight?

Because it is a stroke, not a rule. If the headline stays a fixed hairline while the rest of the letter gains weight, the bold reads as the regular with a wire laid across the top. It is the detail Latin-first families most often miss when they add Devanagari.

How is the type licensed?

Retail families are licensed for desktop, web and application use, priced by seat and by monthly page view for web. Custom families are normally licensed exclusively to the commissioning brand. Working out what a company is already entitled to use is a licensing audit, and is handled as consulting.

How do I license a family or commission one?

Write to studio@webstoree.com or call +91 89815 64862. For licensing, say which family, which scripts, and how many seats or page views. For a commission, send the existing Latin if there is one, the scripts it needs to cover, and the date you need it working.
